Becoming the appointed Food Safety Supervisor
Category 1 and 2 food businesses across Australia have to appoint a Food Safety Supervisor. This is the course that qualifies you for the role.
It's for cooks, chefs, caterers, kitchen hands and food-business managers — anyone appointed to the role, or about to be.

Before you book
A quick language check is part of enrolment. You'll need enough English to read, write and understand the course. After booking, you'll complete a short language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) check in your student account. You need to pass it to do the course. Not sure? Try a practice check first. Why do this course?
Every café, restaurant, takeaway and catering business has to appoint a certified Food Safety Supervisor, and this is the certificate that person holds — the business can nominate the owner, the manager or the chef.

- School canteen or out-of-school-hours care supervisor
- This training does not cover supervising food handling in licensed industries such as aged care or food manufacturing.

- 3Have your USI readyA Unique Student Identifier is required for this course. Get or find yours at usi.gov.au.
- 4Complete a short LLND checkIn your student account you complete a short language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) check. You'll need enough English to take part and to pass it.
- 5We confirm your enrolmentOnce you've finished the LLND check, we confirm your enrolment by email. If there's a problem with your eligibility, we'll contact you directly before you start.

What jobs need a Food Safety Supervisor certificate?
The job of being the appointed Food Safety Supervisor — one per premises, in every café, restaurant, takeaway, catering business, pub or club with food service, mobile food van and home-based food business. The business nominates who it is, and that can be the owner, the manager or the chef.
What's the difference between food handling and Food Safety Supervisor training?
Food handling training (Level 1) covers you to handle food. The Food Safety Supervisor certificate is for the one person each premises has to appoint to oversee food safety — it's the step up, and it's what the business needs from whoever holds that role. If you just need to work with food, the Level 1 course is the one.
