Questions, answered

Get answers specific to your state.

Will my food safety certificate be recognised in other states?
Yes. SITXFSA005 is a nationally recognised unit, so your Statement of Attainment is accepted in every state and territory. There is nothing to transfer if you move interstate.
Does this course meet the food handler training requirement?
Yes. Since 8 December 2023, food handlers in category 1 and 2 food businesses across Australia have had to complete food safety training, and SITXFSA005 meets that requirement.
How long does my Statement of Attainment last?
Your Statement of Attainment does not expire. Refresher training every 5 years is recommended.
How long does the course take?
It depends on how you train. In Victoria it is a 4-hour classroom session, including breaks. Online it is self-paced — you start as soon as you enrol, and you have 2 months to finish.
Do I need any experience or qualifications first?
No experience needed. You will need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) and a valid photo ID. You also need enough English to take part, and after booking you complete a short language, literacy, numeracy and digital check in your student account.
Do I get a card or a licence with this course?
No. Your Statement of Attainment is the document you keep — there is no food handler licence or card attached to this unit. The food authorities regulate the food business, not the certificate.
Is this the same as the Food Safety Supervisor course?
No. This is the Level 1 food handler unit, SITXFSA005 — the training for people who handle food. If your business needs to appoint you as its Food Safety Supervisor, you need the FSS Level 2 course instead.
