Why do this course?
Take charge of your own build: Queensland requires an owner-builder course before you can apply for the permit — and you need that permit for any project worth more than $11,000.
- With the permit you take on the head-contractor role — engaging and coordinating your own contractors, and scheduling the work.
- A permit covers a new home, a renovation or extension, a garage, carport or shed, a pool, or a pergola on your own land.
- You still need a licensed tradesperson for plumbing, draining and gas fitting — an owner-builder permit does not cover that work.
- If your home was built before 1990, one of you also needs asbestos awareness training before you apply.
- QBCC issues one owner-builder permit every 6 years.
- If you sell within 6 years of finishing the work, you have to tell the buyer in writing.
