As chief warden, you're the one who takes charge when an emergency starts.

This course covers preparing for an emergency, commanding and coordinating the response on the day, and closing the emergency out afterwards. It also covers how you communicate with emergency services and with management, during and after.

It's written for chief wardens, deputy chief wardens and communications officers — the people who run a workplace emergency control organisation (ECO).

What you'll need

A USI. A Unique Student Identifier.

Photo ID. A valid photo ID, shown when you arrive on the day.

Accepted ID. A passport, Australian driver's licence, proof of age card or student card are all accepted.

A current Fire Warden Statement of Attainment. You need Fire Warden (PUAFER005) before this course, and your Fire Warden Statement of Attainment is the proof. Show it to us on or before the training day. You can't start the course without it.

Why do this course?

When a building is evacuated, someone has to run it and talk to the fire brigade. This is the training for the chief warden who does that — the person the other wardens answer to.

How you'll train

In person

You train in a classroom with a trainer, working through the emergency plan with practical activities and videos. The session runs 4 hours, and you complete your assessment in class at the end.

We have a ground-floor training room available for participants who require wheelchair access or have difficulty using stairs. Its availability may depend on participant numbers, so please notify us of any accessibility requirements when booking.

Parking

There is no customer parking on site. Limited public parking may be available nearby, including the small Blacktown Council Car Park 72 on Hope Street. Parking limits and availability vary, so check all signs. Allow extra time to park and walk to the venue.

Finding the entrance

Look for Unit 34 and the Edway/Training Aid signage. The entrance leads to a staircase up to the training rooms.

There is no customer parking on site. Paid parking is available nearby at Wilson Parking and at Secure Parking in Kings Cross. Limited metered street parking may be available. Always check the signs. Parking availability, hours and fees can change, so check the operator's website before travelling.

Enter directly from William Street through the shopfront branded Edway and Training Aid. There is one public entrance.

What happens after you book

  1. 1Check your emailYour confirmation email shows your venue, date and time. It comes from no_reply@trainingaid.com.au. It usually arrives within a few minutes of booking.
  2. 2Set up your student accountLog in with the details in your confirmation email and set up your account.
  3. 3Have your USI readyA Unique Student Identifier is required for this course. Get or find yours at usi.gov.au.
  4. 4Complete a short LLND checkIn your student account you complete a short language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) check. You'll need enough English to take part and to pass it.
  5. 5We confirm your enrolmentOnce you've finished the LLND check, we confirm your enrolment by email. If there's a problem with your eligibility, we'll contact you directly before you start.
  6. 6On the dayBring one valid photo ID and your Fire Warden Statement of Attainment, and arrive 15 minutes early. You can't join the class if you're more than 15 minutes late. Your ID is checked when you arrive, and it has to be sighted before your Statement of Attainment can be issued. You complete your assessment in class.

Questions, answered

Do I need to do Fire Warden before this course?
Yes. Fire Warden (PUAFER005) is a mandatory prerequisite, so you need to complete it first. Show us your Fire Warden Statement of Attainment on or before the training day. You can't start this course without it.
What do I get when I finish?
A nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for PUAFER006 Lead an emergency control organisation, issued on the day. It's emailed to you when you finish, and always available to download from your student account. There's no licence or card to apply for.
Will my Statement of Attainment be recognised in other states?
Yes. PUAFER006 is nationally recognised, so your Statement of Attainment is accepted in every state and territory. No licence, card or approved-provider scheme attaches to this course anywhere in Australia.
Does it expire?
No. Your Statement of Attainment doesn't expire. AS 3745 recommends that people in an emergency control organisation refresh their skills at least every 6 months — that's industry practice, not law.
How long does the course take?
4 hours, in one classroom session. You work through preparing for an emergency, running the response and closing it out, with practical activities and an assessment at the end.
Can I do this course online?
No. We run Chief Fire Warden in a classroom, with a trainer. There is no online or self-paced version of this course. The practical activities and the assessment both happen in the room.
What do I need to bring on the day?
Bring one valid photo ID — a passport, Australian driver's licence, proof of age card or student card. Without it your Statement of Attainment can't be issued. Bring your Fire Warden Statement of Attainment as well, and have your USI ready. Arrive 15 minutes early. You can't join the class if you're more than 15 minutes late.
Can I book if I can't see any dates?
Yes. Where no dates are scheduled, the booking page takes an enquiry instead. Send it and Training Aid Australia (RTO 91411) will come back to you about dates.
Do I need a USI?
Yes. A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is required for this course, as it is for all nationally recognised training. It's free, you set it up once, and you can get it at usi.gov.au.
Is there an English or literacy check before I enrol?
You'll need enough English to read, write and understand the course. After booking, you'll complete a short language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) check in your student account.
