What is an RSA certificate, and do you need one?
The RSA course you must complete before you serve alcohol — who needs it, what it covers, and what you end up with in New South Wales and Victoria.

The short answer
RSA stands for Responsible Service of Alcohol. It is the training you complete before you can sell, serve or supply alcohol in a licensed venue. The nationally recognised unit is SITHFAB021 Provide responsible service of alcohol.
Alcohol is a big part of Australian culture, and with it comes responsibility. Your RSA shows a venue you can serve safely, and it is your first step into bar, restaurant and bottle shop work. Each state sets its own RSA rules, so what you end up with depends on where you work.
Who needs Responsible Service of Alcohol training
Anyone who sells, serves or supplies alcohol in a licensed venue. That covers pubs, clubs, restaurants, bottle shops, stadiums and festivals. Bartenders, waitstaff, bottle shop staff and event staff all need it.
It applies to volunteers too. Pouring drinks at a club or an event counts, paid or unpaid.
There is no minimum age to do the training. You must be 18 or over to sell, serve or supply alcohol.
Why is RSA training essential in the hospitality industry?
Because you cannot sell, serve or supply alcohol in a licensed venue without it. Pubs, clubs, restaurants, bottle shops and event bars all need staff who hold it.
It is also what venues look for when they hire. Your RSA tells a manager you know the law, can spot when a patron has had too much and can refuse service calmly. It is your first step into hospitality work.
What the RSA training course covers
The course covers the liquor laws that apply to you and the licensee's responsibilities. It also covers serving alcohol responsibly, recognising and refusing service to intoxicated or under-age patrons, and reducing alcohol-related harm.
You will learn practical ways to handle difficult customers, refuse service politely and keep the venue safe and enjoyable for everyone. RSA-trained staff can confidently make the right call on shift, and venues look for people who can.
If a patron has had too much, you will know how to recognise it, refuse service and keep the situation calm. These steps keep the night running smoothly for patrons and staff alike.
Why does a responsible service of alcohol certificate matter for safer communities?
RSA training exists to reduce alcohol-related harm. When the people pouring drinks can recognise intoxication and refuse service to intoxicated or under-age patrons, everyone is safer.
That protects patrons, your workmates and the wider community. It keeps venues safe and enjoyable places to be, and every RSA-trained server plays a part in that.
What you get from RSA training Sydney and New South Wales
You receive a Statement of Attainment for SITHFAB021 and an interim certificate that covers you to work for 90 days.
You then apply in person at Service NSW for a NSW RSA competency card. The card is valid for 5 years. How do you get your RSA in NSW? walks through each step.
Why do you need RSA training in Sydney?
If you want to work a bar, a bottle shop or a licensed restaurant in Sydney, your RSA comes first. It is the training New South Wales asks of anyone who sells, serves or supplies alcohol, in the city and across the state.
The good news is you can start work on your interim certificate straight after the course, while you apply for your card. One course, and you are ready to start applying for shifts.
What you get from RSA training Melbourne and Victoria
Victoria has no competency card. Liquor Control Victoria issues an RSA Certificate of Completion, and that certificate is the document your employer keeps on site.
It is valid for 3 years. A free refresher every 3 years keeps it current.
It does not travel between states
An RSA works differently from a White Card. It is state-regulated, so one state's RSA is not automatically valid in another.
New South Wales and Victoria each require their own. Moving between them usually means a short bridging course rather than starting from scratch, as long as your training is recent enough.
Next step
Choose your state on the RSA course page to see the study options and the documents you receive. Earn your RSA, and get ready for your next job behind the bar.
If your job in New South Wales also involves gaming machines, compare RSA and RCG — they are separate credentials.
