Can I do my RSA online?

In New South Wales you can choose online or a classroom. In Victoria online is the only option. What self-paced study involves and what you end up with.

The short answer

In New South Wales, you can complete RSA in a classroom or online at your own pace. Both lead to the same training outcome. In Victoria, Edway’s RSA course is online and self-paced.

There is currently no Victorian classroom option through Edway.

New South Wales choices

Both New South Wales options cover SITHFAB021 Provide responsible service of alcohol. They are delivered and issued by Edway Training (RTO 91401), a Liquor & Gaming NSW Approved Training Provider.

Choose the classroom if you prefer a trainer-led day. Choose self-paced study if you want to work through the modules in your own time.

Whichever option you choose, you receive the same Statement of Attainment and the documents needed for the New South Wales RSA competency-card process.

Victoria is online only

The Victorian RSA is online and self-paced. It covers the same national unit, but Victoria has its own certificate process.

Edway Training (RTO 91401) issues your Statement of Attainment. Liquor Control Victoria issues the Victorian RSA Certificate of Completion used at work.

After training, you complete the required Liquor Control Victoria Learning Hub steps before downloading that certificate. The RSA course page sets out the full process.

How self-paced study works

You can pause and return to the course. You have 2 months to finish, counted from the date of your confirmation email rather than your first login.

If you miss that deadline, your enrolment is recorded as not completed and the fee is not refunded. You need to enrol again.

For New South Wales RSA, the modules open in order. You cannot skip ahead.

Before you book

You need valid photo identification and a Unique Student Identifier (USI). You also complete a short language, literacy, numeracy and digital check after booking.

There is no minimum age for the training itself. You must be at least 18 to sell, serve or supply alcohol.

Proving your identity

Online study has 2 identity checkpoints, and the first is the one people get caught by. You can start the modules before your identity is verified, but you cannot finish and be issued a certificate until it is done. The same applies to your USI.

In your student account you upload either an Australian driver licence or a current passport. Choose carefully: once you pick a document type you cannot change it yourself, so contact the office if you select the wrong one.

The second checkpoint is only for the New South Wales card. You apply for it in person at a Service NSW centre with 100 points of identification and have your photo taken. There is no online path for a first competency card.

What you walk away with

In New South Wales you receive a Statement of Attainment for SITHFAB021 and an interim certificate. The interim certificate lets you work for 90 days while your competency card is processed.

The card itself is the NSW RSA competency card, physical and digital, with your photo. Liquor & Gaming NSW issues it through Service NSW, and it is valid for 5 years.

Victoria has no RSA competency card. Your Liquor Control Victoria Certificate of Completion is the evidence your employer keeps on site, and it is valid for 3 years.

Next step

Choose your state on the RSA course page to see the available study options and the documents you receive. If your New South Wales job also involves gaming machines, compare RSA and RCG.
