What is an RCG certificate? Your RCG training guide

RCG certification for NSW gaming work: the Provide Responsible Gambling Services unit, your RCG course Sydney options and the card you receive.

The short answer

RCG stands for Responsible Conduct of Gambling. In New South Wales, you must complete it before you work with gaming machines in a hotel or registered club.

The unit is SITHGAM022 Provide responsible gambling services. After the course you receive a New South Wales competency card with an RCG endorsement.

An RCG certificate from Edway Training lets you work on the gaming floor with confidence. Our RCG training course gives you the skills to spot potential issues and advise patrons on responsible gambling habits.

Who needs RCG, and who needs Advanced Responsible Conduct of Gambling

In New South Wales, RCG applies to anyone whose work involves gaming machines in a hotel or registered club. That includes:

  • staff who work on the gaming floor or in a gaming area
  • staff who pay out gaming machine winnings
  • hotel licensees
  • registered club secretaries and directors
  • Responsible Gambling Officers, who also need Advanced RCG
  • anyone planning to enrol in Advanced RCG

You must be 18 or older to work with gaming machines in New South Wales. If you are moving into a senior gaming role, read who needs the Advanced RCG.

If you prefer a workplace full of activity, people and energy, a gaming room is a great fit. Bartenders, waiters and gaming attendants all move between the bar and the gaming floor, and adding RCG to your RSA lets you take on both shifts.

Working in a casino

Casino workers have one of the most exciting jobs in the hospitality industry. Casino roles have their own licensing arrangements. The casino or Liquor & Gaming NSW can tell you exactly what the role requires.

What the responsible conduct of gambling course covers

The course runs for 1 day. It covers:

  1. Gambling in Australia and New South Wales.
  2. What gambling harm is and how to recognise it.
  3. Responsible gambling and harm-minimisation measures.
  4. Talking with patrons using the RAAR framework.
  5. How responsible conduct of gambling works on a real gaming floor.

You learn how to recognise the signs of gambling harm early, so you can help patrons who may be having a hard time and point them towards support. With these skills, you can feel confident working in any gaming room.

You can take it in a classroom at Darlinghurst, Seven Hills or Mona Vale. You can also join a New South Wales Zoom class. See the course page for dates.

There is no prerequisite. Bring photo ID and have a Unique Student Identifier (USI), an email address and a mobile number. You also need enough English to take part.

Where to do your Responsible Gambling Service training, and who issues it

Edway Training (RTO 91401) delivers the course and issues your Statement of Attainment. Edway Training is a Liquor & Gaming NSW Approved Training Provider.

Edway offers RCG in New South Wales only.

Our Provide Responsible Gambling Services course runs at Darlinghurst, Seven Hills and Mona Vale, so there is a class close to you across Sydney.

What you receive

Here is how to get an RCG card once your training is done. After the course, the steps run in this order:

  1. You get an email and an SMS from OneGov with a link to the Liquor & Gaming NSW online assessment.
  2. You answer 25 questions. You must get every question right to pass.
  3. You receive a 90-day interim certificate. It lets you work with gaming machines straight away.
  4. You apply in person at Service NSW with 100 points of ID. Nobody can apply for you.
  5. Your digital card appears in the Service NSW app. The physical card is posted and usually arrives in about a month.

The card cost is included in the course fee. The card has your photo and is valid for 5 years.

It is the same New South Wales competency card that carries an RSA endorsement, if you hold one. To renew, you complete the online Liquor & Gaming NSW RCG Refresher.

RCG and RSA are separate

RCG covers gaming machines. RSA covers selling, serving or supplying alcohol. One does not include the other.

Many hotel and club staff do both jobs, so they hold both. Holding both RSA and RCG lets you work across the bar and the gaming floor. The RSA or RCG guide explains which one fits your role.

RCG Sydney and other states

New South Wales RCG is not automatically recognised in other states. Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT each require their own approved course.

Your RCG Sydney training covers every hotel and registered club across New South Wales.

If your role also involves serving alcohol, see the RSA course page.
