Advanced RCG is for Responsible Gambling Officers and senior venue staff in New South Wales. Who has to hold it, and what you need before you enrol.

The short answer

Advanced RCG is the New South Wales training for Responsible Gambling Officers and senior staff in hotels and clubs with gaming machines. To carry out RGO duties, Liquor & Gaming NSW requires you to complete it and hold the endorsement on your competency card.

You must complete RCG before you enrol.

Who has to hold it

Responsible Gambling Officers, and people in senior operational roles at a venue with gaming machines. Liquor & Gaming NSW names club secretaries and directors, hotel licensees and approved managers, and staff who supervise gaming operations or RGOs.

Ordinary gaming-floor work does not need it. That is what RCG is for.

Which venues must have an RGO

Every New South Wales hotel and registered club with more than 20 gaming machine entitlements. The requirement sits in the Gaming Machines Regulation 2019 and has applied since 1 July 2024.

Venues of that size therefore need someone on staff who holds Advanced RCG.

You need RCG first

Liquor & Gaming NSW requires you to complete RCG before you enrol in Advanced RCG.

We ask for a bit more than that: your RCG needs to be current. If your card has lapsed, you sit the full RCG course again before Advanced RCG.

Bring photo identification, evidence that you have completed RCG, and your competency card details.

What the course covers

It is about the hard end of the job — managing patron interactions in high-intensity situations, using behavioural models to make decisions, and making ethical calls where the legislation does not give a clear answer.

It also covers designing and running harm-minimisation systems: the policies, the procedures and the workplace culture behind them.

The course takes about 6 hours, in person or live online.

What you get, and where it counts

Advanced RCG is a Liquor & Gaming NSW course, not a nationally accredited unit. There is no Statement of Attainment and no USI.

You receive a course completion certificate on the day you pass, and an ARCG endorsement is added to your New South Wales competency card once your completion is uploaded to Liquor & Gaming NSW.

It counts in New South Wales only. There is no national unit behind it and no equivalent endorsement in other states.

One expiry date for the whole card

Every endorsement on your competency card shares a single expiry date — 5 years from the earliest one. Your Advanced RCG does not run on its own clock.

Completing the RCG Refresher before that date renews the card, and your Advanced RCG endorsement carries across with it.

Next step

See dates and prices on the Advanced RCG course page.

If you have not done RCG yet, start with RCG — or read RSA or RCG if you are not sure which credentials your role needs.
