The short answer
Thinking of working in construction in Sydney? The most important thing you need is your White Card, and it is easy to get when you are prepared.
To get a White Card in NSW, you complete a one-day White Card course with a trainer. You can do it in a classroom in Sydney or in a live Zoom class. In NSW the course is run and issued by Training Aid Australia (RTO 91411), and the card itself comes from SafeWork NSW. You do not need to apply for the card yourself.
White Card course Sydney: live online or classroom
A White Card course in Sydney runs in one of two ways. Both are led by a trainer in real time, and both lead to the same card. Pick the format that fits around your week.
- Classroom in Sydney. You attend a venue in Seven Hills or Darlinghurst for the day.
- Live Zoom class. You join a real class from home, with your camera on. You must be in NSW for the whole Zoom class.
The training is about 6.5 hours, plus breaks, on one day. The course covers the national unit CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry.
This is your construction induction training. You learn how to spot hazards on site, how to report them and how to keep yourself and your crew safe. You use that knowledge from your first day.
In NSW, White Card training must include trainer-led training and assessment. That is why every NSW class is led live by a trainer. Read Can I do my White Card online? for more on this.
What you need to enrol (White Card NSW requirements)
These are the NSW White Card requirements to check before you book. With the right documents ready, the day runs smoothly.
- 100 points of ID. SafeWork NSW sets an evidence-of-identity check. The trainer checks your original documents before the class starts.
- Minimum age of 14.
- A USI. This is your Unique Student Identifier, the number that links your training records.
- Enough English for the course.
- A short skills check. After you book, you complete a language, literacy, numeracy and digital check online in your student account.
For a classroom course, wear enclosed footwear. For a Zoom class, you need a computer or tablet with a webcam and microphone, and stable internet.
You do not need any earlier construction training to enrol.
What you receive and who issues the card
In NSW, Training Aid Australia (RTO 91411) delivers the course. Edway does not issue the NSW White Card course. SafeWork NSW issues the card.
- Statement of Training. When you pass, your trainer gives you a SafeWork NSW Statement of Training. In a classroom you get it on the day. After a Zoom class it comes within 3 days. You can start construction work with it for 60 days while your card is on its way.
- Your application is sent for you. Training Aid Australia sends your application to SafeWork NSW.
- Your White Card is posted. Most cards arrive within 30 days. If yours has not arrived, call SafeWork NSW on 13 10 50.
- Statement of Attainment. You also receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for CPCWHS1001 from Training Aid Australia, within 30 days.
The White Card has no expiry date. It lapses if you are out of construction work for 2 years or more. Read Is my White Card still valid? for details. The card is recognised nationally, so you can use it on sites in other states. Each site will still run its own site induction.
You may hear older workers call it the "Green Card". That was the old NSW name.
White Card Sydney: entry-level construction jobs
The call comes through for work and you are ready to go. Construction hiring moves fast. A supervisor needs someone on site that morning, not next week. Once you have your White Card sorted, you can step into Sydney site work without delay.
Most entry-level construction jobs need a White Card before you start on a site. Common first jobs include:
- construction labourer
- trades assistant
- apprentice
Every one of these needs the card before your first day. Some jobs need more. For example, traffic control needs its own separate accreditation as well as a White Card.
Holding your card shows employers that you take the job seriously. The first job is the hardest to secure, and your White Card removes one of the main barriers standing in your way. We are here to help you take that next step into work.
