Planning to build or renovate your own home in Sydney? An owner-builder course online can help you meet the NSW Fair Trading education requirements before applying for an owner-builder permit. Edway Training delivers this training online under RTO No. 91401, giving Sydney homeowners a self-paced way to complete the required units before applying through Service NSW.

What Is an Owner Builder Course?

An owner-builder course covers the training needed to manage residential building work: workplace health and safety, interpreting plans, estimating costs, organising work and workplace communication. Fair Trading NSW's approved education requirement consists of five units of competency:

  • CPCCWHS2001 – Apply WHS requirements, policies and procedures in the construction industry

  • CPCCOM2001 – Read and interpret plans and specifications

  • CPCCCM1011 – Undertake basic estimation and costing

  • CPCCOM1013 – Plan and organise work

  • CPCCOM1014 – Conduct workplace communication

These units are nationally recognised within the Australian vocational education and training system.

Can You Complete an Owner Builder Course Online in Sydney?

Yes. Edway Training's Owner Builder Course NSW covers all five required units, is fully online and self-paced and issues a Statement of Attainment on completion. You have six months from your confirmation email to finish; after that, the enrolment expires, the fee must be paid again and there are no refunds for non-completion.

When Do You Need an Owner-Builder Permit in NSW?

Work valued over $10,000 requires an owner-builder permit. Work valued at $20,000 or more also requires the units of competency above or approved equivalent qualifications and experience, as well as a current White Card (General Construction Induction Card). Applicants must also provide the required property and ownership documentation.

Do You Need a White Card First?

No. You don't need a White Card to enrol in or complete the Owner Builder Course. A White Card (General Construction Induction Card) is only required when you apply for an owner-builder permit for a project valued at $20,000 or more. If your White Card was issued more than two years ago and you haven't worked in construction since, you'll need to complete the White Card Course again before applying. Edway offers this face-to-face in Sydney or via Zoom.

What Do You Need to Apply for a Permit After Completing the Course?

Apply through Service NSW with your Statement of Attainment, proof of property ownership and, if your project is valued at $20,000 or more, a physical White Card (a digital SafeWork NSW certificate is not accepted). A Statement of Attainment cannot be issued without a valid USI (Unique Student Identifier).
