TC1 Traffic Control Course Information
Skill Set Overview
This skill set addresses the skills and knowledge required for traffic control on Temporary Traffic Management Category 1 environments as described in the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management.
Traffic Controller 1 (TC1) provides skills for safely controlling traffic using stop-slow bats and portable devices. The training includes communication, risk management, and deploying basic traffic signs.
Pathways
Completing the TC1 course provides credits towards recognised qualifications such as RII30920 Certificate III in Civil Construction and Other Certificate II and III Qualifications.
Additionally, TC1 is a prerequisite for advancing to TC2 (Traffic Controller 2).
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
We acknowledge the value of prior learning and offer RPL assessment against Austroads TTM program requirements, including a challenge test. For more information click here
Expiry
The TC1 training is valid for three years from the date of completion.To maintain certification, a refresher course is required every three years.
Training Prerequisite
The unit of competency "CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry" or equivalent is a training prerequisite and entry requirement for TC1 training.
Please be aware that plastic white cards are insufficient documentation of completion and will not be accepted.
The only proof of completion that is accepted is a Statement of Attainment with of CPCWHS1001 "Prepare to work safely in the construction industry competency" or equivalent.

Course details
Course Structure
The Traffic Controller 1(TC 1) course is delivered over two days:
Day 1: Focuses on learning content and the assessment of the theoretical components of the units of competency.
Day 2: Includes familiarisation with the equipment and resources commonly used in traffic control. Learners will have time to use communication tools, practice traffic control techniques, and complete assessments covering practical elements of the combined units of competency.
Post-Course Requirements:
Following the two-day course, learners are required to complete 20 hours of logged practical training experience, which must be undertaken within six months of completing the formal instructional sessions.
Once the 20 hours have been completed, a practical assessment will be conducted in a live traffic environment under the supervision of a qualified assessor.
Assessment
Theory assessment:
During the course, students will study under standard assessment conditions. The theory assessment is a combination of select and constructed response questions.
Practical assessment includes:
Completion of relevant documentation and forms
Scenario-based assessment of communication skills
Establishing a traffic control station
Demonstration of traffic control techniques using a Portable Traffic Signal System (PTSS) and a stop/slow bat
Post Course:
Learners must complete the logbook (provided) and work under the supervision of a qualified and licensed Traffic Controller.

Participants should arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled starting time of the course to complete the necessary registration paperwork.

LLND (Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital)
It is a requirement that all students must have basic English reading, writing, and understanding skills. Interpreters are not allowed for most courses.
From 1/7/25, all students must complete a basic LLND (Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital) test before enrolment. This ensures you can understand the course content and get the right support during training.
All students enrolling in an Edway Training course are required to complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital (LLND) skills assessment as part of their student profile. This ensures they have the necessary skills to perform basic calculations, and to read, write, and communicate effectively in English, enabling them to successfully participate in the training and assessment process.

USI (Unique Student Identifier)
From 1 January 2015, every student who undertakes nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Australia is required to have a USI.
STATEMENT OF ATTAINMENT CANNOT BE ISSUED
if a participant fails to produce a valid USI number.

Identification & Age
Participants must provide one form of photo I.D. (e.g. passport, Australian driver’s licence, proof of age card, student card).
STATEMENT OF ATTAINMENT WILL NOT BE ISSUED
if participants do not provide a valid form of I.D.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn on day 2 of the course. This includes steel-capped boots, long pants, long sleeves, a broad-brimmed hat, safety/sun glasses, and a high visibility shirt, vest, or jacket (VicRoads approved preferred).
THE TRAINER RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REFUSE ENTRY TO THE CLASS IF APPROPRIATE CLOTHING IS NOT WORN.
