Is my White Card still valid?

Updated: Jul 23

Holding a valid White Card in Australia means that you have completed construction induction training with a registered training organisation. In order to obtain a white card, you must complete a one-day training course. Holders of white cards include site managers, supervisors, surveyors, labourers and tradespeople. Generally speaking, everyone who undertakes construction work in Australia must have a white card or they will face a penalty. The training for a white card covers Work Health and Safety related topics such as WHS/OHS legislative requirements, construction hazards and control measure, WHS/OHS communication and reporting procedures and WHS/OHS incident response procedures. The course will enable you to identify hazards, report concerns and respond to incidents. Once you have completed your white card training, you will be given a statement of training which will allow you to commence work on a building or construction site immediately, while your plastic wallet-size card is getting printed and mailed to you. If you undertake White Card training with an accredited Registered Training Organisation in Australia, your white card will be valid in:

  • ACT (Canberra)

  • New South Wales

  • Northern Territory

  • Queensland

  • South Australia

  • Tasmania

  • Victoria

  • Western Australia

It is important to note that in NSW and VIC, white card training should be done through the face-to-face class and many work sites in those states will not accept a White Card that has been obtained through online training. To avoid a situation where your white card is not accepted as valid by an employer or inspector, it is recommended to attend face-to-face training with a registered provider. Once you have received your white card, it will remain valid while you continue to work in construction. However, if you do not work in this field for a period of two consecutive years, you will need to renew your white card by undertaking training again. Losing a white card does not mean you have to complete training again, contact the issuer for a re-print so that you can confirm your qualification.
